Project Lifeline introduces “Podcasts from the Edge of Humanity”, a series where we sit down with the folks working around the clock to help immigrant children. We're going to tell it like it is as we

RAISE YOUR VOICE.
Tell the world that in the United States,
we don’t detain immigrant children

While people have different views on immigration policy, there is no dissent that children must be cared for and protected in ways that take into account their vulnerabilities.

Children tell us what it’s like to be detained at Customs & Border Protection (CBP) facilities – the first place of incarceration for youth running for their lives from the violence in Central America.

  • “The water available to wash my baby smells like urine.”
  • “We are wearing the same clothes the entire time we have been here (three weeks).”
  • “My baby has not eaten a full meal in 15 days.”
  • “The bathrooms near us are very dirty. Sometimes, to punish us, the guards close the bathrooms and do not permit us to use the toilet.”

Is There a Crisis at the Border?

The administration would have us believe that the number of arriving children is the reason why children are languishing, some for more than a month, in the abhorrent conditions of Customs and Border Protection detention. And the reason why unregulated influx facilities like Homestead are needed.

That’s a story. The real culprits are the policies of the administration that intentionally slow the rate of release from ORR shelters by imposing restrictive and unnecessary requirements for the vetting of family sponsors.

We don’t need more money to warehouse children. We need a robust program which prioritizes the expeditious release of children to their families, who are far better suited to care for them than a government that has caused them so much harm.
